What Is Retrograde in Astrology?
A planet is “retrograde” when, seen from Earth, it appears to slow down, stop and drift backward through the zodiac for a while. Nothing actually reverses in space — it is an effect of viewing moving planets from a moving Earth. In astrology, these periods are read as times to review, revisit and rework what that planet rules, rather than to push it forward.

Why planets appear to move backward
Every planet orbits the Sun at its own speed. When Earth, on its faster inner track, overtakes an outer planet such as Mars or Saturn, that planet seems to slide backward against the distant stars — the same way a slower car looks like it is rolling backward as you pass it on the highway. Mercury and Venus, which orbit inside Earth’s path, turn retrograde when they swing between Earth and the Sun. In every case the backward motion is apparent: it describes how the sky looks from here, which is exactly the viewpoint a birth chart uses.
Stations: when a planet seems to stand still
A retrograde begins and ends with a station — a few days when the planet barely moves and seems to hang at one degree. The station retrograde marks the turn backward; the station direct marks the turn forward again. Astrologers often treat the stations as the most noticeable moments of the whole cycle. Many also watch the “shadow”: the stretch of the zodiac the planet will cover three times, first moving forward, then backward, then forward once more.
Fast planets and slow planets
Mercury, Venus and Mars are the personal planets. Their retrogrades are comparatively brief and touch everyday matters: messages, relationships, energy and plans. Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto are retrograde for a large share of every year. Their retrogrades are slower and more collective in tone — less about a missed email and more about quietly revising long-term direction, beliefs and structures.
Why the Sun and Moon are never retrograde
The Sun’s path through the zodiac is simply the reflection of Earth’s own orbit, so it always moves forward. The Moon orbits Earth itself, and its motion across our sky never reverses either. That is why retrograde calendars only ever list the planets from Mercury to Pluto, and why a birth chart can show a retrograde symbol next to a planet but never next to the Sun or Moon.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which planets are retrograde right now?
Retrograde at the moment: Venus, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune.
Does a planet really move backward when it is retrograde?
No. Retrograde motion is an optical effect of watching other planets from a moving Earth. Astrology uses it because a chart describes the sky as seen from Earth.
Is retrograde bad luck?
Not by itself. Retrogrades are traditionally read as review periods: better for revisiting, repairing and finishing than for launching something brand new in the area the planet rules.
What does it mean to be born with a retrograde planet?
A natal retrograde is common — most charts have at least one. It is usually read as that planet’s themes working in a more inward, reflective or unconventional way for the person.
